The American Bison became the national mammal of the United States with the National Bison Legacy Act on May 9, 2016. This law recognizes the bison's historical, cultural, and ecological importance alongside the bald eagle. As North America's largest land mammal, bison once roamed in large herds but now number about 31,000, in protected areas like Yellowstone.
